How hazardous is battery production?

2019-11-07 By Antonis Christofides

People say electric cars are environmentally friendly. They judge this only from the point of view of how much CO₂ they emit, which besides being debatable, is a very narrow way to define “environmentally friendly”.

I’ve heard battery production is quite hazardous, but I seem unable to find any concrete information. I find information about child labor being involved, but while this is sad, I don’t think it’s a problem of batteries any more than it’s a problem of coffee or any other product.

Can anyone point me to information about whether there are environmental hazards in battery production?
