Electric vehicles: real vs imagined benefits

2019-11-06 By Antonis Christofides

I like Volvo’s marketing of their electric trucks. The primary benefits they claim are better working conditions for the drivers and a quieter, cleaner urban environment.

Simple, obvious, and honest. No misleading stuff such as “zero emissions” or alleged energy savings.

Why is this important? It’s important because electric vehicles definitely have a use. If we are honest about their real benefits and shortcomings, we can do good. If we rush to use them because of imagined benefits (e.g. “zero emissions”, which they don’t have, or energy savings, for which there is no evidence), we’ll likely do more harm than good.
