“Zero emissions”

2019-10-21 By Antonis Christofides

A term that seems to be trending is “zero emissions”. It means pretty much the opposite of what it says: nonzero emissions.

“Zero emissions” is of course a shortened sentence—the verb is missing, and the object of “emissions”. However, in the context it’s usually being used, the intended meaning seems to be “The CO₂ emissions produced when running this vehicle are zero.”

However, the actual meaning is practically always “The CO₂ emissions produced when running this vehicle would be zero if [some condition that is never met]”.
