Recently there have been several experiments where a truck goes out driving “on its own”. Except that there is actually a driver in the cabin, ready to take control in case something goes wrong. Typically the experiments end successfully, without the driver having done anything.
Many people seem to think that if you can accomplish that, it is but a small step to take the driver who “does nothing” out of the cabin and make the truck truly driverless. This is no small step, however. You can’t take the driver out of the cabin, and the reason is not just that it would be illegal. If you did take the driver out, sooner or later (in my opinion sooner) the truck would encounter a situation it would be unable to handle, and it would stop. You’d then need to send someone to unstick it.
This isn’t to say the technology isn’t impressive or useful. It is very impressive and very useful, and it might conceivably lead to a driver driving two trucks at the same time (e.g. a train of trucks). But it won’t lead to driverless trucks.
