How intelligent is one who can walk?

2019-10-10 By Antonis Christofides

I’m stunned every time I watch a video of the Atlas robot.

It makes me wonder whether I’ve been wrong in claiming that current and foreseeable technology won’t make truly autonomous vehicles.

Granted, this robot only goes where its operator tells it, it can recognize objects with its vision, and it can pick them up. Not exactly what you’d call “intelligent”. Still very impressive.

Does this progress mean we’re on the right path to autonomy? I don’t see any evidence for that.
